There have been some fun group photos on ST recently, including Raydog’s and Tar’s. Pictures of groups of climbers are a rare thing. It’s hard to get climbers to stand still long enough, and there is a resistance to seeming like a poseur. For pure time transport, though, they are hard to beat, sort of like those stiff civil war pictures taken when photography was just starting and the subjects had to stand still for long moments.

Here’s one from Yosemite, summer of 1979. Light was failing and it’s too dark, but it captures for me that time in the Camp 4 lot, and features a bunch of characters known to Supertopians. It is important to supply the name of each person in the group and I’ll add that later.

Post your group photos here. Identify the people, the place and the year.

Great fun idea for a thread.

In your post I maybe see, L-R, down low, Mike Lechlinski, John Yablonski, then in back, Jim Bridwell, John Bachar?

Jorge posted this a while back. Probably taken in 1972. I am sorting gear. Ajax Greene is observing in background. Rik Reider is inspecting my stuff--George, Rik and I climbed up a bit of CPoF that day to take pictures. Rick Hatch is sitting on the car hood. Ray Jardine is playing guitar. And Jim Erickson--as best as I can tell--is scratching himself. I think Jim wore those same clothes in every photo of him for the entire year.

BVB, Off White, Guy Andrews (RIP), Neil Konami, Galen Kirkwood, Frank Noble, Watusi (1977)

Neil earned the black bar and general shunning by abandoning his belay post during a rockfall event on the first pitch of Stoners Highway, running into the woods leaving Galen unbelayed quite a ways off the deck.

Guy died near the summit of Aconcagua on the first alpine style ascent of the south face.

These are the only two pictures that I have depicting climbers in groups greater than 3. It was fun finding the first pic since it was the first time that I'd met several of the people in it...and I've known them all now for many years. They'd tell you that the funny thing about the picture was that it 'round about the time I nearly killed them with my driving (they learned). The second if from a women's self rescue clinic that an excellent woman named Olga w/ whom I've lost touch had set up at the Davis Rocknasium.

Hah, nothing I like better than getting in ahead of Mickfax!

Rick A – the picture you have posted from the UK is of Curbar Edge. The R facing corner-crack in the background is the Joe Brown classic Elder Crack, while the arête immediately to its left (not the skyline; just right of it) is the more recent Last Great Problem Elder Statesman, climbed by Steve McClure a couple of years ago after many attempts over the years by Britain’ best.

It’s a while since I’ve been there, but I’m pretty sure the climb your gear is in is Usurper E4 6a, which in 1977 would have been very recently put up by Nicky Stokes (if at all: I think actually it was maybe done that year). The crack the gear is in is pumpy but easy, then a rest beneath an overlap, then hard moves over it on flaring finger and other jams in blind cracks?

I don’t know who the climbers are – the chap with the long hair and bandanna looks a little like Andy Parkin, but a lot of people did in those days.

You know you are famous over here in our Llanberis Pass guidebook for your observation – ‘I got half way up your Right Wall and just ran out of gas’? I know how you felt – same thing happened to me.

Got any more?!

Actually my previous guess was rubbish. On reflection I think the one sitting down in the white jersey on the rock is John Syrett, gritstone god and mate of Al Manson, and the one in the white trousers is Graham 'Streaky' Desroy, another Yorkshire climber of the period (and the present for that matter).

The guy on the right is bugging me: I'm sure I've seen him before, but I can't put a face to him.

Actually it was only one edition of the guidebook, I think. On a happier note, Accomazzo’s Wall on Fachwen, the bouldering area on the hill above Llanberis, made the same guidebook. I enjoyed this problem although it is a little difficult to find without local assistance, and I fear is now sinking into obscurity (Fachwen is deeply unfashionable).

Is it possible that the photo was taken on the day of the actual first ascent of Usurper? I have done a bit of armchair research by taking the liberty of posting the photo on a couple of UK sites, and some of my fellow gritstone-history geeks think that the chap in the white top is Nicky Stokes, who made the FA seconded by Al Manson.

Yeah. Good catch. It is a little known fact that Royal's other brother is also named Royal. Sort of explains the name, in a perverse way. Very different personalities. Led to lots of confusion. They had the ability to substitute themselves mid climb without anyone knowing. We all know the feeling where you start up with one partner and feel like you end with another. Pratt was in on it, but he was so quite most of the time.

You are in there too, Ryan--you and Peter Mayfield in your early days of dressing as girls. Criminal if you ask me. Some of the other characters include Jello, Deuce, Chris Vandiver, Dick Erb, DMT, Brutus, Karl, Lois, Crimpester, and Mimi.

Second cross country trek with me on the left, Mark (last name unknown) in the center, and Jim Andrews (AKA "Flash") on the right. The big phallic symbol in the background has something to do with aliens and is under contract to be moved to the Denver airport...

Nice to see this thread come up again!

Can anyone name the climb with Bob Kamps leading a steep thin crack, photo by Jaan, a ways up? Presumably, Needles. (Jun 20, 2011 - 04:32pm PT)
I don't know if I've ever placed my hands on those holds, but they are reminiscent of so many other climbs on California granite.
