This is the bike I spent the last two weeks with riding around Sicily. It's a titanium Ritchey BreakAway travel bike. The original model was steel, but I bugged Tom enough to build a titanium version that he had two prototypes made, one for him and one for me. It's a great bike and makes traveling so much easier.

Love my bikes!

Latest addition is a Juliana (Santa Cruz women's division) with a gravity dropper seat. LOVE LOVE LOVE the 27.5 size. Has less than 50 miles on it. Only one biff so far. I can fix that, undoubtedly.

My many year beloved Specialized Stumpjumper 26 inch. Now retired but not forgotten. This was in Fruita on a nice trail.

My beautiful ole Italian Diva. My custom Bianchi Road Bike that NEVER lets me down. At Rides people always mention the matching Celeste Green Look pedals. Unfortunately they can never be replicated. I was actually able to have a third ring put on the front which has me climbing steeps again.

And my commute bike...what a deal...a techie moving back to India had it already outfitted with panniers and racks. Being retired the only thing I "commute" to is the gym, shopping, local trailheads, friends houses.

I hope I can ride forever.

bought this a few years ago before I started climbing, and jetted around to Woodson and other places before I had any gear, climbing with friends over the summers. Pic is at JTree.

I definitely like having a bike but you really can't haul gear without luggage racks, and even on short trips to Jtree and back it becomes painful on the ass and the knees. Also getting to some places may require driving on trails with ruts so deep that you could conceal a cow in them, a heavy bike like this would be suicidal.

If anyone knows of a guy that has a decent "climber's motorcycle" build that is good on the highway and offroad let me know.

I haven't seen a Brooks leather saddle since... I bought my first bike, a Mercier, in 1974 new for $120. I liked the leather Brooks more than the French saddle that was on mine, so I had the bike-smith swap it.

I rode that bike all over New Orleans, it was easier to get around and parking wasn't a problem; the constant sweating was. There is only one hill in N.O. and it is man made in City Park for kids to play on.

I Rode all over the valley and Tuolumne Meadows, that is to say from the TMCC to the pass or Tenaya Lake.

I did my first triathlons on that bike, starting in 1986. I started looking at racing bicycles then; sold the Mercier to a friend who promptly had a bad accident on it, giving him a concussion and the bending the forks on the bike. He forgot to lock the front wheel in. He gave the bike away, and hasn't been on one since.

I never bought the upgrade. The 2008 Specialized pictured a few pages back belonged to a good friend who passed away and his brother lets me ride Gary's bike. It will always be "Gary's bike". I'm just taking care of it until he needs it again.

If you know a climber who uses EBs, hexes, 50 mtr ropes, Superguide alpine boots and/ or bamboo handled Chuoinard piolets.... then you know what old school is.

Well Rivendell bikes and Grant... the owner... is the old school of the biking world. Their frames are beautiful and over priced... but hell if you got the bucks why not. Better than buying a Porsche.

Anyway I was reading their catalog recently and came across this op ed piece....I like it.

Tips for happy riding
Learn right away that the front brake is the most effective one, and to never lock the front wheel. Learn how far you can lean over without scraping a pedal. Learn to keep the inside pedal UP when you corner, and learn to ride safely in all conditions. Signal your approach to pedestrians, especially if they’re old, and a bell is better than “On your left!” If no bell, try clacking your brake levers. If all you got is “On your left!” that’s fine. At least one ride in 10, go without your sunglasses and gloves. Sometime next month, put some doublesided cheap-style pedals on a good bike and ride in non-cycling garb. Carry an extra tube you can donate to somebody with a flat tire and just a repair kit. If you’re a guy, don’t try to be a mentor to every female cycler you meet. Don’t ride i n shoes you can’t walk through an antique s hop in. Don’t wear clothing that makes your sweat stink even more. Don’t think you’ll go faster in a significant way if you and your bike become more aerodynamic. Put a $20 bill inside your seat post or handlebar and hold it there, somehow. Don’t ride until you’re confident you can f ix a flat. If you ride more than one bike, have a set of bring-along tools for each one. Learn how to remove your rear wheel (put the chain onto the small cog, etc.). If you ride in a group, bring food for you and somebody who forgot to. Go for a one-hour ride underdressed sometime, because it’ll remind you that the earth can beat you up if you’re not careful, and if you always overdress you’ll forget that. Never blame your bike or your health if you’re the last one up the hill or in to the rest stop. If your brake hoods are black, your bar tape shouldn’t be. Don’t let your c hain squeak. If you pass another rider up a hill, say more than “Hi,” but if she’s a woman and you aren’t, don’t assume she wants to chat. If you’re a woman and he’s a guy, you can chit-chat all you like. If you see another rider fast approaching, trying to catch you, let it happen. Fun is more i mportant than fast. Bring normal food, if any, on your ride. Take photos on your rides and give them away. Feel comfortable mixing high tech and low tech, old and new parts and technologies, and don’t apologize to anybody for it. Compliment other people’s bikes, especially if they’re new. Buy the cheapest helmet that fits well. Try seersucker shirts for hot weather riding, and long-sleeved ones are best. If you get a new widget and like it, don’t “swear by it,” just use it. Don’t always shop by price and never ask for discounts at your local bike shop. Every time you go i nto a bike shop, spend at least $2, and if you ask a question and get good advice, s pend $5 (get a cable). If you buy a rack, don’t ask for free installation. Don’t assume your bike shop is making money. Ride only when you feel like it. If you know a fast new rider, don’t say, “You really ought to race…” If you see a stocky woman rider, don’t suggest she race track. Have at least one bike you feel comfortable riding in a downpour. Ride in weather that keeps other cyclers indoors. Don’t keep track of your pedaling cadence. If you have a normal loop or ride, count the number of times you shift on it; then the next time you ride it, cut that in half and see if it makes any difference. Learn to ride nohands and to hop over obstacles, but not simultaneously. Never hit a pedestrian. In traffic, be visible. If you have several bikes, set them up with different equipment…but always ride the saddle you like best. Don’t try to keep up with faster descenders if you’re not comfortable descending. Never apologize for buying something that’s not quite pro quality by saying, “I’m not going to race or anything.” If you buy a stock bike, do something to it that makes it the only one exactly like it in the world. Don’t think i t’s important to match front and rear hubs or rims. If you borrow somebody else’s bike, for a short test or a long ride, say something nice about it. Always bring a pump. Wear out something. Don’t describe any bike, no matter how c heap or dilapidated, as “a piece of crap.” If you get a fancy bike assembled by somebody else, allow them a scrape or two, especially if the bike is really expensive. If you’re suffering badly on a climb, walk. Go for a ride in sandals at least once, and ride around in normal clothes every so often, if only to get your neighbors used to seeing bike riders looking normal.

Built my first wheel today

Well, finished it today.

BD has to cut corners somewhere to sell at the price point they do and it's the hubs. I've finally got into enough shape where spinning 85+ rpm is a possibility and I was starting to outspin my freewheel at about 90 rpm This is kinda hard to describe unless you have experienced it but it manifests itself as slack and clunking in the drive train, it was also noticeable on the transitions from standing to seated climbing and vice versa. On top of that the Vuelta wheel picked up some threads, probably from a tire bead and sucked them into the freewheel mechanism. I managed to fix it, but it took an ultrasonic cleaner, specially modified 12mm Allen wrench and much swearing. The Vuelta that BD was buying then is kind of a frankenstein between a freehub and a freewheel, difficult to get apart, not user friendly serviceable and not easy to find replacements. Lots of seal drag too and also no readily available replacement seals.

I've also got disc brakes and 130 OLD spacing so hub choices are limited.

I scored on a discounted White CX Ti hub and mated it with a fairly heavy 29er rim (Alex TD17) and a 36 spoke 3 cross build. Sapim double butted spokes and Al nipples. Total cost was $310.

I used the bike as a truing stand and invested in a $38 Harbor Freight dial indicator and snake head clamp that I need for work anyway. It ended up at 0.004 TIR laterally and 0.008 TIR Radially so it's true to about the thickness of the decals. the big disadvantage to doing it this way is guestimating the dish/centering with no flat surfaces to measure from I ended up being about 1mm off to the right. The machinist in my past came out and it's a bit like indicating in a 36 instead of a 4 jaw chuck. Not difficult, but does require some sense of what the metal is doing and patience. I also got really aggressive about the stress relieving process.
(put the axle on a block of wood, grab the rim and try to taco it working your way all the way around, flip over, repeat)

All of the NDS nipples got a dollop of green (penetrating grade) Locktite on completion

I was primarily interested in getting the hub situation rectified, but as a bonus it's about 200g lighter than the old wheel with a wider stronger rim to boot.

Took it out for a spin this afternoon and no alarming pings or noises so I must have done something right, The ride is noticeably more comfortable too. I'd attribute that to the fact that the OEM wheel has oversize blade forks that have about the same cross sectional area as a really thick round spoke. The double butted ones would be springier. How that will play out as far as the potential for future fatigue failure only time will tell.

One thing I will do different next time is to use grease rather than thin oil on the DS nipples. That would make bringing them up to tension much smoother with less slip/stick action. The NDS the torque is so low you could probably leave them dry.

Had a couple of Niteriders over the years, they are way overpriced now and they gouge you on spare parts. Great luck with Magicshine at 30-40% of the price. 2 on the bars for even coverage, one on helmet to look around corners, you can ride anything. Using just a helmet light sucks, the steep angle washes out any contrast, it's like skiing in a whiteout. I'm actually using a couple of Chinese rigs now, $30 on Amazon for the whole kit. The batteries didn't last but a good replacement from Magicshine is compatible. Yeah, we do a lot of night riding!

I ride about once or twice a week at night. I agree with much of the above. Light and Motion or Lezyne. My NR light have been nice but all of them died more quickly than I'd like. I currently use a single 650 or 800 lumen if I'm just riding road/gravel, and use the pair (one on the helmet, one on the bars) on the trails.

My latest ebike build:

30 mph on the trail is very fast for this tank. The tires cushion one some but on order is a Thudbuster seat post and Velo Plush seat. The tires running low air pressure make up for lack of short travel front shocks.

But excellent slow speed stablility on snow, ice and mud.

The key to not dying on the road at night is lots of lights.... I've always got 2-3 on my back for when things break or run out of juice. Getting hit by cars and trucks sucks. I know from experience.

Those little "Blitzu" USB-charged Lithium lights are great. Very bright and light so I can carry half a dozen for long night-time rides.

Hey Jeebs, some places will rent you different night-light rigs. There's a shop local to me that has done rentals and demos. Might check that angle with your local shops, before taking the plunge, see what you really want/need.

I tried one out last summer with a co-worker who was in the market for them. It was pretty fun, and they were way brighter than I expected. It's about the only way you can ride in the IE in summer, my local trail system has almost zero shade and routinely hits 105F in summer. So it's dawn patrol or night riding...or heat stroke.

Wilbeer, Thanks for the input. I've been riding a Specialized Roubaix.

The bike shop here just took the Cervelo line on. I've been offered the deal of a lifetime on the S-5. A project/trade-out deal is the best way to describe it, (me being the project). It isn't going to cost me $5K or anywhere near that in monetary terms. I'm far from a professional level rider at this point, actually a running convert after having knee replacement surgery.

The one I'm drooling over has HED wheels.

I have been on one for a short ride and it seemed awesome. A little intimidating actually.

I’ll second or third the Light and Motion and Lezyne lights. I cringed at spending $250 bucks for the L&M Taz 1200 and another $45 for the Vis 180. Now, 3 yrs later and zero issues I realize it was a cheap investment, second only to a good helmet. I added the Lezyne 1,000 lm helmet light at a friend’s suggestion – use it to nail drivers who might think about pulling out in front of me. Both headlights are good for an hour at full power which works for the commute. In addition to the L&M tail light I use a couple of cheap Planet Bike blinkies, one on my helmet and one on rear bike frame. They’re okay but eat batteries and dim with battery loss – need to switch to USB rechargeables at some point. Funny thing is that with all the lights I feel safer commuting at night this time of year than I do in the summer in daylight.

What about rain gear? I commute 16 mi rt in Tacoma and switch between lightweight Showers Pass and MEC jackets. Both are okay but even with pit zips fully open I’m pretty much soaked from sweat when I get to work. I’ve tried the SP rainpants and feel too encumbered. I’ve found that a decent pair of thermal knickers or tights seem adequate for the hour commute. They keep me warm, but wet and not as much fun for longer wet rides. What are others doing?

Whatever you get, have fun with them lights! One more plug for Light&Motion…I do not notice the weight of the 800 lumen Urban model on my helmet and it includes the batt(a self-contained unit). I did notice my old slightly heavier Blackburn(as in I had to wear my helmet extra tight on the DH to keep it from moving so that I could accurately point the beam) and it wasn’t even a self-contained unit, it had a wire and I had to wear a pack to put the batt in. Just a couple ‘lil’ things that can make a diff on a night ride.
Nice looking roadies! I demo’d an Orbea Orca a little while ago and was blown away by how it felt, especially on the dirt roads. In the Missoula area, our road riding is like climbing in Kansas but our dirt road riding is like having the Valley(a wee-dramatic stretch!) in your backyard, so I have an all-road Hunter CX rig 3 with bottle mounts for logging road day tours….here she is just after the stork delivered her…

Scraptee-
RE: rainwear… do they make a softshell that is mostly waterproof? I do not frequently ride in heavy rain but my cold spring/fall rides can have rain, snow and fairly cold temps so I focus on moisture management. This is wear shells basically suck for me, I put out hella heat when my heartrate climbs. I almost always wear wool and use lightweight breathable thin shells if it is raining or for the DH. A thick wool sweater(to match your knickers!) can be very nice when it is cold and maybe drizzling. Your body heat will aid in keeping the water high in the wool and it is very breathable. If it looks to be just frikkin wet, I bring a change of clothes in the backpack. For the commute, having a gym nearby work where I have a locker has been convenient for me. I get warm on the early AM ride, pull and fall from plastic, do PT, take a shower, put on the dry clothes and then a quick ¼ mile commute has me at work by 8am.
I need to rid myself of my backpack and switch to waterproof panniers that turn into a backpack when I get to my destination. Riding with the backpack just makes me sweatier. Anybody doing this? Is Ortlieb the way to go for the panniers/backpack? Or are there others…?

I've got 8 rides on the Mojo3 and learning something new just about very ride RE: technique, DWlink, etc. Been riding MTBs in all forms for 34 years and the DWlink, better geo and wide rims of today is pretty nice.

I'll try for a pic tonight...

^^BoyHowdy, I hear that!^^
This isn't about a 1-up but you ever ride fixt? I do it for the funness of the consta-spin and early in the season for knee/hip health. Cyclists have fairly unbalanced lower bodies and I have to do PT to take of my knees/hips from past use. For me, the fixt is better at balancing out the legs due to all of the resistance spinning you do on the DH and how you mix it up in the rocks or technical terrain. Off road fixt amplifies this as well as all the new balance techniques you learn. I have a fixt X bike that I run 38-42c's on. I've learned more about how to ride efficiently on my fixt'r than any other bike..

What it should really says is, "If you're looking to blow out your meniscus, try going uphill with one gear"

As some of you may know, I used to road race. Many of those Omni's were torture-fests! Sherman Pass Omni comes to mind. The choice to spin at a higher gear or pony up and go big and out of the saddle. I found out several years later and soon to be scheduled MRI for my knee, that climbing big is a fast way to surgery.

As someone mentioned a little bit upthread, this is a cool time to be a cyclist. I could see how some could be frustrated by all the different wheel size standards being tossed around, but it is pretty amazing to be able to tune your ride via tire size, rim width and diameter to such fine degrees. I've always felt tires and wheels really define the ride quality of the bike and we are spoiled with being able to make pretty much any combo a reality these days.

Hey Mooch, I have to disagree with that. I've been SSing/fixting for over 20 years and 10 of that was exclusively SS. I have a compromised knee from HS football then another 5 years of Rugby.
On the SS, I've done 100 milers off road, all-day gigs on trails, etc. This is one of those things that people either 1. think without experience or 2. don't learn to do it right. Via climbing, I have always worked on myself to bring myself up to a challenge (and of course not always making it!) where I also get to work on my patience. SS teaches one that there are 10,000 ways to pedal a bike and it is a requirement to try and learn some if you want to do it and enjoy. I learned that simply sitting and spinning will not work, I also learned that smoothness instead of just raw strength will allow for longer more fun days on the bike. If you take the time to bring yourself up the horizon is limitless. My legs/joints feel as strong as they were in my 20s. Of course there is subjective matter in that statement! You don't chip holds to make a route do-able or less physically demanding eh?! Gears are like chipping! ;^)

Since the old bike was a 26" Blur TRC frame...

I built the new 27.5 frame up from scratch (re-used only the rear shock and saddle). Pro Deal from Crank Brothers and heavy discounts through Incycle (thanks Troy!) made it affordable.

Now, I'm taking all the components from my old bike and building a 26" Carbon hardtail - should be less than 21 lbs.

Mike & Crager, what is with all that white stuff?

It's the stuff that keeps life interesting! As mentioned above, I started with an '84 Stumpster with 3 rings and dropped the big ring in the mid 90's due to the Techy McTechy tech stuff I encountered in the N. Rockies and the early Gnar Gnarlson of the early freeride days in SEBC and then to SS only (primarily on wagon wheels) for a decade outa pure boredom. I got a fancy 1x on my UPPB - ultra posh plastic bike - and for me too, there is absolutely no looking back.
</Rant>My 50yo body loves this new stuff but I have to say, the direction of 'growing the sport' for the masses over the last decade or so is saddening. All this dumbing down so folks NEVER have to walk and work out the moves is blasphemous to the spirit, like chipping to you climbers. The flow trail devo is an unnecessary scar and really isn't mountain biking, it is BMX in the woods. But, I am lucky b/c up here we are slow and more reluctant to change so just as folks are realizing the lameness of the flow, it is just beginning here and we have a lot less of it. Flow trails are also only in the front country around here as the other primary users,: elk, deer, moose, wolves, etc. aren't pushing for more flow these days. At least we have that going for us! <Rant/>

Hey Wilbeer, I do not get it and have argued for decades to separate mountain biking from bmx or trick riding types of bicycling and the terra differences between the 2. You don't need a mountain to do back flips, can-cans, etc. however, you do if you want endless techy miles of singletrack and a feeling of being out there. Our moto trails are narrower and do less enviro damage than the single crazily built up flow trail we have. We have to bike parks being built in town and will quench the thirst of the jumpers and maybe some of our front country trails will narrow out but maybe not. The OutdoorLifestylers have been landing here like pigeonshit on a steeple and they screw up the riding areas enough!!

Edit: Yeah Wilbeer the energy/effort is always best when used to learn tech, skill and processes - aka, the old fashioned way. This is a foundation to climbing among other things but in the modern climate of want/need it fast, I believe learning the art/basics/nuances of any given philosophy and activity are evaporating in our modern society. I blame it on Google but really it is the current EGO that is constantly marinated in the internets.

Mike, Cragnshag and I met up yesterday (after perhaps over indulging in Christmas food and drink), for a ride from out of Mike's very scenic "backyard." High clouds kept the temps in the 60s, but the previous months of Santa Ana winds ensured the dirt was parched and dry as a bone (not ideal).

From previous experience, I knew Cragnshag would make me look bad both uphill and down (so he rode extra slow). Mike, the ever gracious host, shepherded me down the more technically "interesting" sections -- I've become much more risk adverse as I close in of the Medicare years.

A truly fun filled day and great company. Thanks guys!

Do you all have recommendations for beam type pannier racks for fully suspended mountain bikes? The one that I see most is the Topeak MTX BeamRack Rear Bike Rack. I already have the bike, so I don't have the better option of using a real (wedge?) rack that mounts to the seat stays.

I know this style has a limited weight capacity.

Thanks Mike and BigB. I still have a slightly smaller behind the seat setup from Alaska days, but I hadn't seen the under the top-tube bags. So no multi-day bike camping trips on a full suspension? I was thinking of: out, camp then unladen day trips. Or, heck just using it as a commute bike to schlep all my city-crap around.

And it comes down to me just being retro grouch that likes racks.

Hensel said it.... don't encourage him.

Was cruising the back alleys of SLC the other day, like I do, looking for pussy in need of fixing (4000 so far, Wilt Chamberlain - totally incompetent dude) when I saw something glinting in the gutter. A small unopened bottle of 170 proof vodka. Five minutes later I toss the bottle back, empty, smashing it on the sidewalk for good measure, and five minutes after that I'm feeling pretty invincible, like I did when I was 25 and told a climber twice as big as me he should get a red ball, stick it on his nose and apply for a job in the circus. So I thinks to myself, will this old Kaw do 170 mph? After wringing its neck down the freeway for a while I realized I needed to gas up, and as I was pumping I saw the cop pull in behind. I figured 167mph (POS old Saki never did make it) was going to be a big ticket, more than I paid for the bike. Well, the cop leaned over to get a look at the odometer so I grabbed him by the short hair on the temples and as he squealed like a pig I smashed his head into the gas tank (see photo) and booked it WOT for the horizon. Made a lovely bass note (tank and head both being hollow) but left quite the dent.
I hope forehead imprints aren't like gun barrels or the sh!t might still hit the fan.

I've been riding this thing for the past 9 months, and loving it!

Soma Juice steel frame. 2017 version can handle 27.5+ or 29er wheels. I have it set up as a 27.5+ right now, singlespeed. Rockshox Rebas 120mm, Spank Oozy 35mm Rims, DTSwiss 350 Hubs, Race Face crankset (cool- no bolts). Looking for a nice set of 29er wheels for racing.
This set-up is really fun though. A very capable hardtail.

Took me a long time to finally get an Evo....

Was looking all over for a 2017 Team frameset without discs, turns out they were only released in Europe. Then this bike popped up on eBay - as a fundraiser for Bicycles for Humanity Colorado. That's the non profit of my favorite Pro race team, Cannondale-Drapac.

Since I got it, I have been using it to ride in a lot of charity rides - paying it forward. I already had a full C/D team kit (Screw Rule 17) so I set the bike up with the team correct cages, bottles and Garmin computer.

2017 Cannondale Evo HiMod Di2, Cannondale-Drapac Team Issue. Former practice bike of current rider Lawson Craddock. Ultegra Di2, Dura Ace/SiSL2 setup.

Was set up with a Standard front crank when I got it, currently running an OPI Spidering Mid-Compact with Ultegra 11-30 on the back as we have a heavy climbing ride coming up (Rosarito-Ensenada.) Will go back to the Standard when I have flatter stuff to do.

This is SBDP, Same Bike Different Place. The photo is looking southeast from the coast road between Porto Novo and Rubiera Grande on Santo Antao Island, Cape Verde. Yup, them there are cobbles. I have ridden the cobbles of Paris Roubaix and these translate nicely into a 3-star sector, except that they are way longer than a km or two. In the towns you have to really hold your line or you might get run over by a truck or errant taxi.

Randy,

yeah, the cobbles really start to wear on you after a few KM's. It's too bad that on the island of Santo Antao there is this spectacular 5000' climb that is stunning on both sides, but it's totally cobbled and the cobbles are in pretty rough shape. If you think it's difficult riding up steep cobbles, just try riding down them!

Thanks Sketch! I got pretty lucky with it, and it's an amazing machine. I've wanted the Di2 since the Ultegra version came out, and I won't go back to mechanical.

The best part is, there was a bad paint blemish on one of the seat stays - looked like there had been a major frame repair and then painted badly. No bump there or anything, and the frame is solid, but I was still concerned - fixing carbon frames is touchy to say the least.

When I asked Cannondale-Drapac about it, they checked and there was no record of the frame being repaired...but in the interests of being stand-up folks, they are sourcing me another frame at the end of this season.

So, the wife and I are going to head over to Girona, where the training camp is, at the end of the season. Going to pick up the bike, rent one for her, and spend a few days riding in the area. Looking forward to it!

Here is a recent shot of the wife and I - we had a chance to ride the I-11 bypass around Boulder City before it opened, so we jumped on the chance even with the high temps.

I'm on my Evo which used to belong to Lawson Craddock, who made quite a stir at the Tour this year - probably the most attention ever given a lanterne rouge!

Wife is on her Liv Langma, which was her bday present this year. She got really strong chasing me on a hybrid, and now I usually end up chasing her haha.

RIP my favorite ride.

This was a custom frame, hand-built 38 years ago. I've put well over 100,000 miles on it, and reckoned it would be with me until the day I died. Which, 10 days ago, almost turned out to be true when I hit a concrete divider at high speed and cartwheeled way into the air and landed on my head.

Somehow, I survived (although it'll be a while before I'm fully healed), but, alas, the bike is toast. The wheel isn't even out of true, the forks and head tube appear to be undamaged, but the down tube is... well you can see in the top photo that it has an entirely new shape. Top tube as well, although the fold (a couple of inches from the head tube) isn't as obvious.

Bottom photo shows the divider I hit. I went completely airborne and cleared the divider by three or four feet.

Guess I'm in the market for a new road bike.

Bit like my packs....I live in the past. Retro bikes.....I have a garage full. My Amp B4 after a day out in the "Surrey slurry" on the Surrey Hills UK. Group of us did a retro ride.

It's been so warm this winter, barely below 0 until now, that I never got my hubs winterized, so now no riding at -36F. Boo hoo...

Picked up a new addition this weekend. The two rigs shown are my primary MTBs:

2018 Trek Farley Ex 8
2015 Salsa Bucksaw 2

My son will ride the Bucksaw, as he has been riding a Gravity Bullseye Monster Comp hardtail for the last year. The Bucksaw is quite the step up! Both of us rode it this weekend and liked it quite a bit!

I found this gem, completely stock, in the dumpster many years ago. I stripped off the heavy/ broken stuff and made it my 'round town hipster wannabe bike.

Visited the Mt. Bike Hall of Fame a couple weeks ago. Many great bikes on display:

Sorry for late reply! I LOVE the Farley EX 8. I just got a second set of wheels (29" x 3.0") and freakin love it in fatty and plus modes. Still prefer fatty mode (27.5" x 3.8") but the 3.0"s roll faster for sure on less technical terrain.

My son also loves the Bucksaw. I can tell by his increased frequency of requests to go riding. I took him and his three friends on a good "rainy day" trail yesterday and they all had a blast:

Sounds like I missed a snooze-fest superbowl, so I'm good with that! Watching my son get stoked on MTB'ing and now him recruiting his friends makes me a proud Dad!

Nice there Stahl~! You ride Mezcal while you were out there? The ocotillo out there is pretty coo. Man, after I rode Sedona on all the well thought out and interesting trails, I had a hard time riding Goose or the Moab zone in general. The riding a is step above, IMHO, pun intended. Oh, and the Great Basin is coo n'all but the fauna/flora of the Sonora desert coupled with the Sedona geo is just amazing. AZ Cypress trees growing in red sandstone is a sight to behold!! StahlBrutha, more pics please!!

Tom- which brand of kickstand do you prefer?

Most likely the kind I prefer?
