SC, we worked with the Bouvier rescue folks and provided foster care for two dogs. It was very rewarding to see them go to new homes of people who were so happy to have them join the family. One couple from the bay area sends us photos of their much happier Bouvier!
Reilly, Sorry about your yellow lab, great she spent time in the Winds. We lost Abby our lab last year, great memories some of which are posted on "things your dog ate"!!!!

here say, all.... first off....
my heart felt condolences to those have posted recenlty on their dogs passing-on.... :(
very hard sasd times, it is, though the dog is free from its pain of illness, we still feel the pain of lost friendship...
but now, too, i wanted to share what ekat mentioned about the german shepards, and dog rescue...
where i used to work, it was terrible sad (for cats and dogs, both)...
many are killed daily... :( as the shelter is too small, and, the dog-section does NOT want to keep large dogs alive... (too much trouble--terrible, it was!!!!)... :(
(mind wander, here)--
well, it makes you wish and pray that the well-funded folks in the world (not saying it is there fault, or that they are obligated, only that if there was some that knew and were able to travel and a host of etc) (you know, the ol' "pipe dream" scenario)....THAT:
wow, it would be so neat for them to get folks together, and move all the dogs from where they were not wanted, and filling the shelters, to other towns, where dogs were needed or wanted, or not as plenty...an far-and-wide, travel job, full-time, at that... (more far-fetched dreaming, i know)...
well then, obviosly, the dogs could go to homes... :)
yep--i know, it does not work that way---but after seeing what i saw for so long---my mind drifted that way often...
the worse part of it all, was seeing the wonerful dog, full of life and love, when a kennal worker went into it cage to take it out! and the dog was innocently following them, just to be KILLED... :((
well, i can't talk about it any more... it's breaking me up...
i, too, sadly, had my dogs taken away from my now-ex, in texas, and this is what must have happened to them, and i was in no possition to get them back, due to being in the same house with him...
now, i will never put myself in that possition again...
i love my dogs and they loved and trusted me... and, well... sosrry,
that's it for now... :((
well, except that the good lord trusted to give me a wonderful dog now, and even in this tiny place... so, i can do good now...
say, lets hope and pray for these poor dogs... (i know hungry, neglected kids are top priority too, but we can add the critters into our hopes, as well)....
well, all for now, on this...

hey there say.... patty ann marie, on her porch, doing porch-duty, while the kids were playing... :)
well, she THINKS it's her duty to patrol, at any rate... :))
and, she finally learned she ACTUALLY CAN roll-over, (the neighbors donated their yard to her):
i am so happy for patty getting a chance to be alive, and here...

"She spends 100 hours a week moving dogs from one cage to another!"
That's a very scary thing!
Oh my yes and I certainly hope that won't be my experience or I won't be able to do it. Golden Gate Lab Rescue primarily rescues from the Bakersfield shelter which is basically a killing machine...no temperment or behavior check to determine adoption suitability...just a conveyor belt of killing. Typically these rescue labs are adopted within one week and during that time the foster is expected to be with the dog with only short periods of separation. As a foster I am expected to help assess the dog for suitability for adoption to families with other pets, kids, stuff like that. The rescue folks are extremely picky about the care and feeding...no kibble, mostly fresh stuff, no preservatives. My house had to be checked out to be sure the yard and fencing were secure. So my hope is that it will be a good experience and adding another foster home to the mix means another saved Lab.

Hi Neebee.
There is actually an organization that does exactly what you talked about in your above post.
http://www.alamorescuefriends.org/
The great lady who runs this charity takes dogs from SanAntonio, TX high-kill shelters and transports them to no-kill shelters in other states.

hey there say, ncrockclimber... wow... say, thanks for the share...
yeah, i really wish there was more... no matter how many dogs in the state, or overcrowding of them... there must be some cities that are "low on dogs" too... somewhere...
would sure be neat if we could just "spread them around" a bit, too... :)
hope it works good, as i know with every endeavor, at times it can be trial and error, but---that is how we find success...
thanks, i will go read the link...
god bless
:)

I do volunteer work with a couple of rescue groups. I don't think anyone has a shortage :(
Getting a dog from a shelter instead of a breeder will help loads. Just accept the fact that you'll get a dog at least a year or two old. Puppies are rarely in shelters.
Pits are one of the most common breeds in the shelter. Despite general opinion, they're potentially great dogs. Like any dog, they can be great with kids, cats, other dogs, neighbors, etc. Depends a lot on the owner.
heres a video that's been travelling the shelter circuit the last few weeks

Edit: That's awesome Chiloe. Out here in Cal. it's not so good to be in a county shelter

When we went puppy-hunting last year we were told that New Hampshire imports puppies. Enough people in this state are conscientious owners who spay or neuter their pets, so local shelters aren't flooded with unwanted litters. In fact, they don't have enough for the people who want to adopt.
To meet that demand, unwanted puppies are brought in from other states where the shelters are dead ends. This little girl was part of a litter sent from Indiana.
The New Hampshire vets who work with shelters here to process new puppies recognized Sophie right away when we brought her back months later for a checkup. They recalled her as a tiny abandoned puppy, and were delighted to see the happy, healthy dog she had grown up to be.

A day at the crags with your beasts is a good day to live.
When you can't take them they're so sad to see you go.
But they sure make your day even better when you return!
What would we do without our beasts? Don't give it another thought for its another day and not this one!

Hey Anders!
Actually, she was NOT happy. We had been camping out for a couple of nights with gorgeous weather, then right as I was packing the moka pot that morning the bottom fell out. Ab absolutely detests the rain, so having to paddle in the rain was, for her, sheer torture. She got over it quickly, though, when she got dry. I, however, was just glad to be on the water.
Hope all's well with you!

hey there say, jim wilcox.... i know... sadly, this is what i thought.... but still, after seeing this (as you just saw it too) perhaps there is hope that more folks that are "well off" and full of compassion, can at least try to look into this more...
the news we just saw from chiloe:
When we went puppy-hunting last year we were told that New Hampshire imports puppies. Enough people in this state are conscientious owners who spay or neuter their pets, so local shelters aren't flooded with unwanted litters. In fact, they don't have enough for the people who want to adopt.

well, here now is patty ann marie....
first pic:
HER FEELINGS?
"OH NO! walk-leader has once AGAIN stopped to make me POSE for pictures!!"
"Ohhhhhhhhhhhh me-oh-my... "
but, she's a real trouper... :))
and she rises noble to the occasion!
sweetly first.... (then, next pic, very noble)...
and now, noble:
such a wonderful pup-dog!
:)
*gave her a bath, too, (rarely seems to need one)---and FORGOT to have a
camera near by.... (not safe to run and get it, as she is not happy in the tub).... didn't look much different, though, most likely you'd never know she was wet---except for the LOOK ON HER FACE... :))

charlie---great pics.... :)
also, to the others, the pics have not downloaded yet... will have to come back to see more.... i sure love the pics...
god bless...
:)
*oh my, jim... thanks for the link and the notes on the rescue... around here, sometimes it is done only as one person dictates and it can get very sad at time... this ONE place (in particular) is very limited on space, so they get rid (kill off) many dogs and "tons" of cats... :(

Charlie D-- Your late "Abby" looks like the twin sister of our late "Sunnygirl." I bet they're pulling twin pranks on the angel caretakers up there in doggie heaven. ;)
We rescued Sunny along with her littermates at just 5wks old from a local puppy mill(we got their mother out of there too). We lost most all of the pups to parvo within a week, but she and her brother Clancy pulled through.
Clancy is still with us-- a happy old soul who turns 14 next week.
