Tuolumne Bouldering, CA, USA
Approach time: 3-5 minutes
Season: May-October Number of problems: 25 Type of rock: Granite Overview
Reminiscent of the rocks at the Gunks in New York, with horizontal slashes and cracks, it’s easy to see where it got the name. Discovered by John Bachar and Dave Yerian in the 1980s, this boulder-strewn cliff-band hosts many a classic line. On the left side of the main wall the epic Steelfingers Traverse is the obvious long, technical horizontal crack/face traverse. Rising above the traverse are the classics Cellulite Eliminator (V7) and Gunks Crack (V1). To the northwest of the main wall are a pile of good moderates and the fun problem known simply as The Arête (V4). A short hike up right (west) of the main wall will get you to the Mean Greens, a few good highballs and a cool traverse. For pure bouldering this is one of the best areas in Tuolumne, with fewer crowds, a short hike, and a nice selection of well-featured classics. Notable Bouldering Problems
ALL OF THE PROBLEMS AT THE GUNKS ARE CLASSIC! but especially Steelfingers Traverse V8-V10****, Cellulite Eliminator V7****, Gunks Crack V1****, The Arete V4*** and the Mean Greens V7/8*** and V8*** Photos
