Trip Report
Photo sphere tour of the Snake Dike and a quick look over the edge

by Mr_T
Tuesday June 3, 2014 9:45am
We climbed the Snake Dike two weeks ago.

We snapped a series of photo spheres on the route.

A shot over the edge.

And the selfie with the world's most patient belayer.

This brought a big smile to my face. Thanks! This gives a flashback way better than a flat photograph.

some sweet pictures...how'd you shoot that one of you guys climbing?

I pan'd around and didn't see a pole or anything off the leader. clever.

Looks like you had summit to yourself, save for that lone hiker.

thanks for sharing!

This was done with a 6 GoPro 360 rig. The rig shoots 6 photos at once. I had the rig on a monopod in my pack. The stitching software decided that the pod was noise and removes it.

So cool! What was your setup? And how did you get the "floating" perspective of the shot on route, where we see the back of your helmet, pack, etc.

That's my partner and I in the shot of thank god ledge (the person with the black jacket and green backpack)

Huddling in the cold on the ledge, getting hit with droplets of urine, I couldn't imagine what sort of things the hikers were doing on the top of half dome. Then, to top it off, I see a rope starting to get lowered from the Visor...

In a grumpy mood, I asked the photographer if this was part of our dystopic future...

That was you guys down on the Zig Zags! Psyched you guys could see the shot! Did you top out that day? It was surprisingly cold even out in the sun.

It's unfortunate we didn't have the daylight (or battery) left to wait to get a shot of your team leading across Thank God Ledge.

Edit: you weren't getting hit with urine. It was snow melt off that big patch on top. We were getting sprinkled by it as well.

To stitch we're using PTGui. We calibrate the rig one time and apply the template to all the images. You can see that there was something slightly off in the calibration - I'll have to redo these at some point.

The future of Supertopo is mapped routes with go pro and HD cameras, then you can see move by move which piece of pro to use!

I can see it now.

lol, should be somehow integrated into google earth. I dont know how the 360 camera works but you really feel like you're there. The go pros on the helmets make me seasick, climbers move their heads too much to make good movies.

[corrrection: it already IS integrated into google maps. I'm way behind in this era of total information awareness.]

That is unreal. I can see the future here. Guidebooks will be digital and have every hold marked. Total beta of a route.

I really liked the one looking down the NW face. Thank God ledge is an incredible feature.
