Sounds like they are about to get raked over the coals, so to speak. Hopefully this isn't construed as insensitive.

but this isn't PG&E's first rodeo by a long margin.

10 years after the 2007 fires caused by SDGE powerlines, many residents have yet to be reimbursed. SDGE still claims that it should be allowed to raise rates to cover its own mistakes.
http://www.eastcountymagazine.org/cpuc-holds-meeting-chula-vista-puts-decision-sdge-charging-ratepayers-2007-san-diego-county-wildfire

Similarly,
SCE and SDGE continue to claim they were correct in buying off the PUC so that ratepayers will have to cover the utilities own mistakes in operating San Onofre power plant. All they had to do was redo the steam generators in 2012 at a cost of perhaps $700 million, which Mitsubishi agreed to help with. Instead the utilities made backroom deals with the crooked PUC to shut down the entire plant, making ratepayers pay for most of the $5 billion cost, and providing the utilities a way to make higher profits elsewhere with new power plants and distribution schemes.

At the time, the idiot patsy TURN ( a northern California group with no legitimate basis to weigh in on So Cal issues) was wrongly given a role by the PUC, and agreed with the massive giveaway, in return for a paltry attorney fee payout bribe (of approx. .001% of the amount of ratepayer money being stolen).

One has to think that above-ground utility lines are a setup for this sort of thing in a windstorm.

Now comes the decisions, as to replace the downed lines with underground lines, and permanently fix the problem, or pay less to place them back above, and set it up for the whole thing all over again.

There really needs to be some serious thinking going into the aftermath of these things!

I believe the Swall fire several winters ago was the result of SCE power lines being blown down resulting in numerous home losses...SCE denied responsibility...There was another fire 10 years before that came close to leveling Swall Meadows attributed to a San Diego power company crew...No bad deed goes unrewarded when you can bribe the PUC...

2nd solution; chop down every tree within 50 feet of power lines. Top the remainder outside of 50 ft so none can contact lines in the event of failure.

Third solution: Business as usual.

History, read it and weep.

Get a refund on your ticket to Utopia, if you can. There is mounting evidence that it doesn't exist.

PG&E cares about profits first and prudence only when it protects the profits.

We are going to have to get a load of investment into our electrical, gas, water, and transportation systems ASAP that is long overdue.

Is this what the pundits mean when they talk about a decayed and decaying infrastructure in the USA? Corruption and indifference go hand-in-hand.

^^^^ Well put, mate. At least we’re not arguing the utility of utilities.

I could prove, if a grand jury were convened, that the USFS caused the largest fire (Station) in LA County/ San Gabriel Mts history. Then they let it blow up to cover their tracks.

YOU CAN’T HANDLE THE TRUTH!

Here is what the Station Fire looked like from the beach.

This fire should have been a few dozen acres. Instead it consumed most of the Angeles National Forest.

pmac, I was told the facts in confidence that I will not break UNLESS I see a strong likelihood that something good would come of it. If you love conspiracies and cover ups this is for you but, as is so often the case, the truth will not out here without some heavy hitters getting involved and I don’t see that happening. Those hypocrites at the $14,000,000 Angeles NF Taj Mahal in Arcadia look to be safe, for now.

Nice shor, Ggnome!

^^^ Right on, Reilly.

I guess a thought about PG&E as to these recent fires: There were high winds in the forecast. Would it not be a good idea to shut down power preemptively? Everyone would complain I am sure, but on the other hand

Pmac, while quite the thread drift you might want to go to The Economist and search for their article on solar geo-magnetic storms’ effect on the power grid. We’re in the last two years of the current sunspot cycle and the threat is deemed serious enough that the Pentagon and Homeland Security are ‘gaming’ the civil unrest that could ensue.

Average price for underground is $10,000 per span. Spans average 20 per mile.

That's actually pretty low. For an average primary distribution line (12kV to 34kV or so) under ground lines run around $450k per mile here in AZ and it can go much higher.
